Let Routines Set You Free: The Power of Predictability in Adult Instruction

Effective classroom routines do more than streamline instruction—they build academic skills, foster a supportive learning community, and empower students to take ownership of their learning. In this session, participants will explore practical, research-backed routines that enhance engagement, promote language development, and create a structured yet flexible environment. Through real-world examples and interactive discussions, teachers will leave with concrete strategies to implement routines that boost student confidence, participation, and long-term success.

There's a lot of talk about the importance that employers place on soft skills in the workplace, including clear and effective communication, critical thinking, and self-management. The question for beginning and intermediate English language teachers is how to explicitly teach these skills in ESL classes? This session will introduce the concept of soft skills in the classroom, provide concrete language and activities for discussing and practicing them with learners, and language that learners can use in job interviews to share their abilities.

Teaching Soft Skills To English Language Learners

Engagement and Interaction in the English Language Classroom

Developing community and creating opportunities for engagement are essential ingredients for a successful learning experience. But what does this look like in an English language class where there are multiple languages spoken and/or people at the very beginning of their language learning journey? In this training, learn classroom management strategies and instructional approaches that provide multiple opportunities for adult language learners to interact with one another, practice their language skills in a variety of ways, and help people to stay engaged and interested throughout the entire class time.

Promising Practices for a Multilevel Classroom

English language classrooms feature a wide variety of educational backgrounds, abilities, and learning preferences, which contributes to a multilevel dynamic. This training will highlight promising teaching practices for supporting learners who need additional support, learners who move ahead quickly, and everyone in between. Participants will see concrete ideas for modifying activities to support a range of learner needs and abilities, and get ideas for teaching that can be implemented immediately.

ABC! Teaching Phonics to Adult Language Learners

Phonics is a crucial part of becoming a reader, yet many adult ESL learners lack sufficient decoding skills to be able to sound out and recognize new words, and don’t get adequate phonics instruction in their beginning level classes. Learn about existing phonics curricula, as well as phonics activities to help learners with blending, segmenting, and developing phonemic awareness skills. Participants will leave with multiple activities and suggestions for connecting phonics to content, and making phonics relevant and engaging to learners.

Approaches and Activities to Support Writing Development

Incorporating writing activities into instruction for English language learners is a challenge for many teachers and tutors whether you are teaching online or in-person. In this session, participants will learn techniques for scaffolding writing activities so that learners of all levels develop their abilities to produce provisional, readable, and polished writing samples. The session will also share a variety of writing routines and activities that connect with content and support learners’ writing development and confidence.

Talk Amongst Yourselves: Building Up to Learner-Facilitated Conversations

A conversation is more than talking and listening! In this session, participants will learn the crucial ingredient for creating an atmosphere where learners feel comfortable taking risks with their conversation skills. Participants will also explore three essential skills learners need in order to join a conversation and keep it going, and will learn how to introduce those strategies to their classes or conversation groups and get learners talking in small groups online or in-person. Come ready to participate and try out the techniques!
